Writing Center

The Writing Center offers peer-to-peer support on any writing-related assignment or task.

Our Center is staffed by a group of trained undergraduate Writing Consultants from a variety of majors. Our mission is to collaborate with writers from across the academic disciplines to nurture individuals’ unique writing practices, to guide writers to hone their own writing processes, and to cultivate an equitable learning environment.

Our Writing Consultants provide one-on-one assistance with papers and written work from all disciplines at any stage of the drafting process—from brainstorming through final revision. We work with writers to strengthen their critical thinking, deepen their rhetorical awareness, and to approach writing with confidence. We can help writers at all skill levels define an appropriate topic, break down assignments, organize material, analyze written drafts for strengths and weaknesses, revise, edit, and so forth.

What to Expect During a Session

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. The Writing Center is not an editing service; Consultants are not here simply to “fix” student papers. Sessions are conversation-based, and the goal of our work is to guide writers to an understanding of their writing processes in order to help them best implement techniques for approaching their own work. Students work together with Writing Consultants to discuss and practice strategies for their writing. Each session is tailored to the writer’s individual concerns, and final decisions about assignments are always left to the student.
