The Center for Optimal College Readiness at Manhattan College has been awarded an Americorps VISTA position, and is looking to hire a full-time VISTA.
Manhattan College and partners propose a critical service to low-income NYC students and their families to: navigate the NYC high school admission process. The VISTA will focus on curriculum and model development, training, and outcomes research with Center for Optimal College Readiness Director, Dr. Fitzpatrick, and Assistant Director. They will help assess current status of efforts on high school articulation, career/college readiness, and potential of volunteers to engage. They will participate in recruitment of students with our partners. The VISTA worker will then strategically focus on capturing the desire and commitment of the partners to sustain this work and build their capacity to do so.
Like the Peace Corps, the Americorps VISTA program offers a very rewarding experience building the capacity of a low-income community to succeed. While the salary is low, VISTA volunteers also receive health insurance, loan deferral, and a Segal Americorps Education Award (worth more than $5000 toward student loans or graduate school), and other benefits, In addition, Manhattan College will offer discounted housing, meal plans and tuition to the VISTA.
